Mary Poppins Returns (2019) – Family, Fantasy, Musical

I was really unsure whether or not to watch this film and ten minutes in I was regretting my decision but by the end I was smiling like a fool!

I am really not sure how to class this film. Is it a continuation of the original story, could it be classed as a remake or is it a carbon copy with details changed to protect the innocent?

Well, let us have a think about it, the story first of all, Michael Banks is a fully grown Paddington Bear, sorry man(Ben Whishaw) who has three children of his own, they still live in his parents house, the House Keeper Ellen, has not seemed to have aged the thirty odd years since the original but has turned into Julie Walters, which is a superb bit of casting and Jane Banks is living by herself, given up on love but following her mother’s Union ways and is also now Emily Mortimer(an amazing actress and a perfect fit for this role). Problems with finance occurs and stressful situations and children trying to help their Dad and this all leads to the re-appearance of the titular Mary Poppins, who is now an incredibly posh Emily Blunt, who has her friend Jack the lamp lighter ready to sing along with her (Lin-Manuel ‘Hamilton’ Miranda stealing the song and dance show.

So, let us look at the similarities

1) Gone is Bert the Chimney sweep, we now have Jack the lamp lighter.

2) The Old Admiral and his midshipman are still on their roof (pretty sure that ship would have rotted by now).

3) Chim Chimney a nee has become Trip the Light fantastic.

4) The rooftop setting is now a sewer.

5) Michael now works for the Bank and loses his temper with his children.

6) The children cause problems in the Bank and then run away (with Mary in tow)

7) The Carousel and Super Cali has become a Royal Doulton Bowl and a Music Hall.

8) The penguins are still there.

9) Pigeon lady is now balloon lady.

10) Bert’s Uncle is now Mary’s cousin (great fun from Meryl Streep).

11) Laughing and floating is Topsy Turvey.

12) Spoon full of sugar is replaced by bath time fun.

13) Votes for Women, The Kite, Tuppence, Jumping and Foot clicking, Practically perfect in every way are all still there.

14) Jack is played with an overtly cock er knee accent.

15) Dick Van Dyke steals the show.

16) It is bliming good fun.

Emily Blunt makes a very good Mary Poppins, she can sing and dance as well and has the authority, kindness and cheeky little side looks down perfectly. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a very talented man and Jack is actually more believable a character than Bert, though Bert is da man! Colin Firth pops up and is Disney/panto baddy badman. Karen Dotrice, the original Jane Banks, pops up for nostalgia sake and it is lovely to see her.

The film is not perfect and as you can see there are so many comparisons and niggles you can make, the songs are not as catchy but that could be because I have had the original songs in my life for forty years and have heard these once, but this is a lovely film which had me and my Dad smiling throughout, I turned to him at the end and said this is the type of film that I can see families watching at Christmas just as we did with the oiginal. And for that, it can have a Light Fantastic 16/20, it probably is a 14/20 film but just for pure make me smile sakes it can have a couple more points.
