I am a huge fan of The Expanse TV Series and have been watching it with my Dad over the last year. It is right up our street when it comes to a TV program. My Dad has read all of the existing books by James S.A. Corey, so I have always been tempted to give them a go but have always had other books on the go instead.
But I thought, it’s January 2020, it’s the perfect time to start reading an ever growing series of already eight pretty hefty reads which has built a really in-depth universe. I mean why not start a mission in the New Year!
I am so glad that I made that decision, what a wonderful writer Mr Corey is and what a Universe he has created. The characters of Holden, Amos, Naomi and Alex who I love in the TV Series are developing into even more addictive characters through my understanding of them in the books – Alex needs to be built up more and given more page time though. However, Amos is just one of the best characters put to paper or screen. What has taken the TV Series many episodes to get to, has been a journey across just one book. I cannot wait to see how many layers are added to the story over the next seven books.
Anyway, if you do not know your OPA from your Protogen or your Roci from your Eros, we are transported to a world of Earther and their cousin, the colonists of Mars and the Belters who live on the fringes of society with their own values, ideas and language. A universe where companies can control everything and where a small ship can make one heck of a difference if it is Captained by an ex-navy man with a moral compass, who is helped by a Belter with engineering skills coming out of her elongated frame, a Martian pilot with a Wild West drawl and a cagey human, with some of the best and most sweary lines ever put to paper and the ability to not give a flying… Add in a Cop, who has nothing left to lose, on a mission to find a missing girl, and some really screwed up science and you have one rollercoaster of a journey and this is only just the beginning!
This is one of those occasions where an excellent TV series has come from a superb book series but I am also glad I saw the series first as the books are building upon what I already love instead of the TV series taking only parts of an amazing story.
So, whatever your media preference is, page turner or episode binger, immerse yourself in the world of Mr Corey’s Expanse, you will not be sorry!
