Us – 2019 – Horror, Thriller

After Jordan Peele’s excellent writer/director debut – ‘Get Out’ I was very interested to see how he would follow it up. The word of mouth about ‘Us’ was very good, and I went into it with high expectations but also expecting the unexpected.

Mr Peele is obviously a very intelligent man, who can write an intricate story and follow it through with a very clear director’s eye. Us follows the Wilson family, mother Adelaide has some seriously weird experience as a child in a funfair (they’re never good places to visit as a child, only bad things ever happen there). So, what does she do, she goes on a holiday to the same place but takes her children this time - not the most sensible thing to do in my opinion.

Whilst they are away, they experience a power cut and then a strangely familiar family appear on their drive way. From then on, it all gets a bit hectic and screwed up. The people are the ‘Tethered’ who are generally out to seek major revenge and they have scissors to do it with. There are some quite disgusting death scenes, but never too graphic. There’s some funny moments, the family discussing death counts is very reminiscent of Gimli and Legolas.

Lupita Nyong'o is an excellent actress, who I only really knew as Maz Kanata in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens and from Black Panther(great films both). She plays both desperate and psychopathic incredibly well. Elisabeth Moss (Kitty Tyler) is another stand out in the cast, playing wealthily entitled and psychopathic with equal measures of gusto and subtlety and Winston Duke brings some needed humour and general WTF to his role as Gabe, the father of the family. The two children, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex are both wonderfully cast and believably screwed in the head, by the whole experience. Fun fact, twins, Cali and Noelle Sheldon, who play Kitty’s daughters were Baby Emma in friends, both girls play stroppy, privileged children and psychopathic(can you spot a theme here) wannabe killers disturbingly well, I am never going to be able to see Baby Emma in the same light again during the constant reruns of Friends.

Us, is not particularly scary in my opinion and I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to horror movies but it is tremendously well-written, a great idea, fantastically acted and directed and full of little twists and turns which is fast becoming Jordan Peele’s signature.

Well-worth a watch, just do not have a mirror or a pair of scissors in the room, when you do.
